This is an enormous honor for me. I spent years as a Rotary spouse since 1998, during which time I was exposed to the many great things Rotary International does and has done for the community and the world.
The Rotary Theme for the 2009-2010 year is “The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands”, which I take to mean, “The Future of Rotary is in Our Hands”. As Rotary International President John Kenny points out, “In Rotary, everything we are, and every thing we aspire to become, lies in the hands of Rotarians and their clubs.” To this end I submitted an aggressive membership goal for the 2009-2010 year-a net increase of ten well-qualified members, because the strength of the Rotary Club of Madison is in the membership. We cannot help but thrive with the membership we have built and are continuing to build. Our members are well qualified, honest, respected in the community and in their vocations. We all know the Future of Rotary is in Our Hands. We are ever mindful of the need to carefully plan and competently carry out our service projects and fundraisers.
District Governor Colin Gershon has set the District 7980 theme as "One Earth, One Humanity". This is a very timely and appropriate theme, as a major obstacle to progress in many parts of the world where Rotarians are giving their service is an extremely stressed environment. President Kenny has asked that we focus particularly on water and sanitation, as the scarcity of clean water is an increasingly serious issue in many parts of the world. To this end we hope to partner with a sister Rotary Club in a rainwater harvesting project for eight schools in northern India.
Job one for Rotary International is “Eradicate Polio”. To this end we look forward to the challenge of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and will exceed our commitment to the “Polio Plus” community fundraising effort as we did during the 2008-2009 Rotary Year.
My personal goal for each and every one of us is to "Have Fun and Enjoy Rotary" as we gather to do our service projects, fundraisers and fellowship events. Make your membership in Madison fun for your family, fun for your fellow Rotarians and fun for yourself. I look forward to a fun year with Rotary as we continue with the great things we do and start on some new ventures.
Once again, it's a real honor for me to join the ranks of the 81 Rotarians before me who have rung the bell each Thursday to call the meeting to order. Please consider the Rotary Club of Madison as your vehicle for giving back to the community and to the world and having fun and fellowship in the process. One earth, One Humanity-The Future or Rotary is in Our Hands!
Yours in Rotary,
David T. Moore
President 2009-2010
